Friends in high places

After the magic of Russia, I decided to chase it again in 2019 at the Rugby World Cup in Japan. Same story: no ticket, no plan, no connections. I cold-emailed the CEO of USA Rugby, and to my surprise, he responded. A friendship sparked, and a guest ticket followed.

I flew into Tokyo, then took the long train to Kobe for USA versus England. Navigating Japan was its own test, but I found myself in a local bar packed with the few Americans in town. Strangers became friends instantly. At the stadium, I sat with USA Rugby executives, families, even the US ambassador to Japan. The U.S. got crushed, but the experience was unforgettable. Days later, an invitation to a state dinner at the Ambassadors residence hit my inbox. I was unable to attend but the lesson was clear. Energy opens doors.
